Microsoft said it had more than 1,600 engineers working on projects related to the new GDPR rules.

The largest US technology companies, which manage the data of millions of Europeans, had been pouring resources into complying with the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into force on 25 May 2018.

Since the new complex rules require companies to transform software, policies and processes, some smaller companies chose to pull out of Europe altogether.

For non-compliance with GDPR, companies risk fines of as much as 4% of their global revenue or €20 million ($23.4 million), whichever is larger.
